What is a residence permit

A residence permit is a document that gives a right to a foreign citizen to reside in the Republic of Latvia and, thus, in the Schengen area:

• for a limited time – temporary residence permit
• or permanently – permanent residence permit.

Requirements for obtaining a residence permit in Latvia

To obtain a residence permit in Latvia and Schengen are for 90 days per year, you may choose what type of investment you want to make. The amounts and requirements of the investments are set out in the Immigration Law of the Republic of Latvia. From September 1, 2014, new regulations are in force.

Real estate investments

• Sum of investment for obtaining a residence permit in force until August 31, 2014
• Acquisition of real estate in Riga or Greater Riga in the value of at least 142 300 euro.
• In the rest of the territory of Latvia – in the value of at least 71 150 euro.
• Sum of investment for obtaining a residence permit in force from September 1, 2014

Upon the coming into effect of the new regulations of the Immigration Law of the Republic of Latvia at the aforementioned date, to obtain a residence permit, it will be necessary to make a real estate investment in the amount of 250 000 euro, regardless of its location.

Investment into business

The alternative for obtaining a residence permit in Latvia and Schengen zone is to invest into the development of business in Latvia.

• To invest at least 284 575 euro for at least five years into the subordinated capital of Latvian credit institutions.
• To invest at least 35 571 euro in the fixed capital of Latvian companies, thus providing at least five new jobs, where at least 50% of the employed are the residents of Latvia, EU or European Economic Area. This company must contribute to state or local municipality budget at least 28 457 euro through taxes.
